Why September Is One of My Favourite Months to Surf in Tamraght

People often ask me when the best time to surf in Morocco is. While every season has something unique to offer, my answer is almost always the same: September.
For me, September is when you get the best of both worlds. The long, sunny days of summer are still here, the Atlantic is at its warmest, and the first autumn swells begin rolling onto Morocco’s coastline. Add in quieter beaches and a relaxed atmosphere around Tamraght, and it’s easy to see why it’s my favourite month to be in the water.
Here’s why I think September is one of the best times to surf in Tamraght.
1. The Surf Season Begins
September marks the start of Morocco’s famous surf season. The North Atlantic begins to wake up, bringing more consistent swells to our coastline.
Whether you’re standing up for the first time or looking to improve your surfing, there’s usually something for everyone—from mellow beach breaks for beginners to long, peeling point breaks for more experienced surfers.
2. Summer Isn’t Over Yet
One of the biggest reasons I love September is that it still feels like summer.
After months of sunshine, the ocean is beautifully warm, the days are long, and the evenings are perfect for relaxing on a rooftop with friends after a surf. Most days, a light spring suit is more than enough, and on warmer afternoons you’ll often see surfers in boardshorts or bikinis.
It’s the perfect chance to enjoy Morocco’s autumn waves without saying goodbye to summer.
3. More Waves, Fewer Crowds
September sits just before the busiest months of the surf season, so many of our local breaks are still wonderfully uncrowded.
That means more opportunities to catch waves, more space to build confidence, and a more relaxed experience in the water. Whether you’re surfing Devil’s Rock, Banana Point or one of the nearby beach breaks, you’ll often find yourself spending more time surfing and less time waiting your turn.
4. Tamraght Slows Down
As the summer holidays come to an end, our little village returns to its laid-back rhythm.
The cafés are quieter, the sunsets seem to last forever, and there’s a calm feeling around the town. It’s one of my favourite times to share Tamraght with visitors because you get to experience the village just as we love it.
5. Great Value for Your Holiday
September is also a fantastic time to travel from Europe. Direct flights to Agadir are often more affordable than during peak summer, meaning you can enjoy warm weather, great surf and a relaxing Moroccan escape without paying peak-season prices.
