THE STORY BEHIND SHAKA
We’re often asked how a surfer from Tamraght and a charity worker from London ended up building a surf camp together on Morocco’s Atlantic coast.
It all started with a career break that changed everything.
Beth left her job in the NGO and charity sector in London to take a year out working at a surf camp in Taghazout. The plan was simple—spend a year by the ocean, then return to the UK. But Morocco quickly changed that plan. She fell in love with the lifestyle, the surf, and the local community.
Just a few kilometres away in Tamraght, Hassan grew up immersed in the ocean—surfing, fishing, and playing football on the beach. Long before the area became a global surf destination, he was learning the coastline and building deep local knowledge of the waves.
When they met, they quickly bonded over a shared love of surfing, travel, and community. Over time, a simple idea grew into a shared vision: to create a surf experience that felt more personal, more welcoming, and more connected to Morocco.
In 2016, Shaka Surf Morocco was born.
At the time, many surf camps focused on large groups and fixed programmes. We wanted something different—small groups, personal coaching, and a genuine connection to the place and people.
What started as a small surf camp has grown into an award-winning retreat welcoming guests from around the world. Along the way, we got married and built a family together here in Tamraght.
Today, Shaka is a reflection of the life we’ve built—rooted in the ocean, our community, and a shared love of surfing.
