INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2020

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2020

— AN EQUAL WORLD IS AN ENABLED WORLD —

#EachforEqual #IWD2020

Today marks the 109th annual celebration of International Women’s Day - a day to celebrate the great social, economic, political and cultural achievements of women around the globe whilst raising awareness for the continued need for greater gender equality.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #EachforEqual

The surfing world is overflowing with inspirational, empowered women shredding epic waves, doing that they love and inspiring a younger generation of surfers and making the sport an more and more increasingly feasible career. Surfers such as Maya Gabeira, the Brazilian big wave surfer known for chasing the worlds largest ocean waves and Bethany Hamilton, who after surviving a shark attack at 13 and loosing one arm, she recovered, got back on her surfboard, and taught herself how to surf with just one arm.

Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, guts. That’s what little girls are made of; the heck with sugar and spice..jpg

Tamraght is also proud to be the home of Meryem el Gardoum a fearless surfer, shredding in the big swells, tearing down the waves with grace, elegance and ease. Meryem is currently Morocco’s four-time female surf champion. You can read more about her feature with Billabong’s #knowthefeeling online here.

Equal by Nature + WSL

In September 2018 surfing became a trailblazing sport, promoting equal pay when the World Surfing League (WSL) announced equal prize money for men and women across all WSL controlled events. A massive step in the right direction with the decision making the WSL one of the only U.S based sports requiring equal pay for men and women. You can read more about this on the WSL website here.

SURFING NOW…

On this International Women’s Day we recognise and are proud that surfing has made this historic move in enabling equal pay for men and women competing across all WSL events however we are aware there is still more we can do as a collective community to promote more equality. Increased access to surfing for women, promoting equal pay for sponsorship deals, promoting images of women shredding rather than bikini shots and sharing stories of inspirational female surfers. Together we can make a change and an equal world is an enabled world.
